Sex, Spies and Sapphires

Sex Spies and SapphiresSex, Spies and Sapphires
Shelley Munro

An heirloom sapphire. That’s where Sarah Walsh’s troubles began. Oh and sex. That came into the equation when she met Flynn Wangford. Now he has her sapphire and she wants it back.

Bad boy Flynn is causing trouble again. Sarah and fellow spy, sometimes lover Thomas MacIntyre attend Lord Maxwell’s society birthday party, their assignment to protect the British prime minister and royal guest Princess Leila from Mundavia while keeping an eye on Flynn Wangford. For Sarah it’s a chance to retrieve her sapphire, an opportunity she fully intends to exploit. Somehow, she’ll juggle official duties and best the cocky Australian. But before she knows it, Sarah is alone with Flynn and somehow they end up horizontal. The sex is explosive and hot, hot, hot, but she can’t stop thinking about Thomas. Two men. They’re so different yet both are delectable and very distracting for a woman with a mission.

Sarah must concentrate on recovering her sapphire but it seems she and Flynn aren’t the only players in the quest to secure the gemstone. Thomas wants the sapphire as well.

Sex, Spies and Sapphires is due for release on 11 May. I’ve just found out I’m going to be away for release date and thought I’d post an early excerpt.

Erotic Romance vs Erotica

I’m a bit late getting this post up - sorry, I was up until 2:00am getting line edits done only for my son to wake me up at 7:00am to talk to his girlfriend’s parents. She’s coming to spend the afternoon with us and it’s going to be interesting to see if she can decipher what the bags under my eyes and my strident need for caffeine actually means.

Well, there are some hot debates going on today on various blogs. One such subject is the difference between erotic romance and erotica.

I don’t happen to write erotica, but is there anything wrong with it? No, not in my opinion. Some people like it, some people don’t. But I do believe that if it’s a duck, you should label it a duck instead of calling it a chicken (which I like baked with lots of ginger).

For example, my debut book PRIMED TO POUNCE, published by Ellora’s Cave, received four stars from Romantic Times (RT). The reviewer enjoyed the plot, the chemistry between the hero and heroine, and that fact that the heroine was a kick-butt type woman. She also enjoyed the romance AND the sex.

But what most people don’t know is that the same book was rejected by Kensington Aphrodesia because it wasn’t hot enough and the heroine was too old with too much baggage.

Turned out they were looking for EROTICA. It didn’t matter that the line was called erotic romance, it wasn’t what they were looking for.

So here’s my questions: 1) Do you think that some of the pubs are mislabeling the genres? 2) Have you had an experience where you picked up a book expecting a romance with a happily-ever-after, only to find it was erotic (no HEA required, sex just ’cause, and not necessarily a romance) ?

Interview with TJ

TJ has her very first print book out at the moment so I thought I’d post an interview I did with her in February to celebrate!

TJ taps her over fifteen years experience in technology to create realistic stories with out of this world characters. Working for an interesting organization puts her in close contact with even more interesting people.

And with an imagination expanded beyond belief since the birth of her two now teen-aged children (she’ll never be sane again), spinning life’s experiences into tales is a blast.

Now that books have caught up to technology (she loves her eBookwise!), TJ’s eBook reader is shown no mercy, forced to entertain her at all hours of the day or night. Even in the dark!

With seven books sold last year (four released with three coming in 2007) TJ hasn’t lost steam. Her mind? Yep, that’s gone, but steam there is aplenty. Currently she’s working on EGYPTIAN VOYAGE for EC’s 2007 Torrid Tarot series, and SERATI’S FLAME, the follow up book to her February release, CARINIAN’S SEEKER. A true Taurus, TJ isn’t slowing down and she’s definitely too stubborn to stop when she sees the fence!

1. Tell us a little about your latest release, CARINIAN’S SEEKER.
CARINIAN’S SEEKER is Book 1 in a series called the Vampire Council of Ethics. It’s a story about a biogeneticist who’s obsessed with death.

Bottom line, she thinks death is overrated and isn’t interested in going there. All her family has succumbed to some dreaded disease or another so she’s spent years trying to find a way to emulate fictional vampire traits. She doesn’t believe in vampires but the man of her dreams turns out to be one. And not only is he a bad-boy vamp, he’s a Seeker. Basically, vamp law enforcement.

2. You’ve also written books featuring feline shifters. What attracts you to the paranormal? (shifters and vampires)
Perhaps it’s my background, but I’m really not sure. My family is part Lakota Sioux and Blackfeet so I tend to weave Native beliefs into some of my books.
I also love paranormal because it’s unusual. I can make up anything I want, be anyone I want, give them any kind of powers I want. I appreciate the freedom of paranormal fiction.

3. When you create a hero what qualities do you like him to have most of all?
The hero has got to be able to understand the heroine. He may be bullheaded, stubborn and mean as hell, but in the end he’s going to understand his woman’s needs and move hell and earth to meet them.
Makes it hard on my heroes because my heroines are always strong, kick-butt women. They may have baggage, but they’ll put it down long enough to kick your ass!

4. What can fans look forward to next from TJ Michaels?
I’m working on a book called EGYPTIAN VOYAGE for Ellora’s Cave. It’s set on a Mediterranean cruise and is a spin off of PRIMED TO POUNCE.

So, you’ll find feline spirit guides, a heroine with awesome intuition and abilities, and handsome men, both good and bad. Also, like POUNCE, this book has loads of suspense, twists and turns. And hot sex!

5. If you had an entire day to yourself, how would you spend it?
I wouldn’t do a darned thing. Having a full-time job makes writing difficult so I find myself up too late and more tired than I should be.

6. Tell us one thing about the writer TJ Michaels that we might not already know?
That I used to be a bodybuilder! I still get in the gym, but not as much as I used to. Also, having two children added a bit of padding to a few places I’m finding impossible to “un-pad.” LOL!

7. Do you have a website or newsletter for readers to check out?
Yep. My website is www.tjmichaels.com . My newsletter is still in the beta stage but is coming soon. There’ll be a link on the home page to subscribe.

If you have any additional questions for TJ ask away! I’m sure we can tempt her to come and answer them for us.

From Partay to Partay!

SAMHAIN HOME ALONE WAS A BLAST! - I hosted a huge party with a ton of other Samhain Authors for those who were not attending RT. It. Was. A. Blast! We had the Samhain Cafe Yahoo group rockin’ all day and into the night.

One lucky winner received a copy of Lauren Dane’s TRIAD from Ellora’s Cave. Another received a copy of my book, JAGUAR’S RULE. Another won a gift certificate from Samhain’s MyBookstoreAndMore site to purchase whatever they please - and that was just from me. Several of the other authors gave away tons of stuff and the readers had a blast. Huge thanks to all the authors and readers who participated.

Now I’m headed over to Ellora’s Cave for their Home Alone Partay hosted by none other than the marvelous N.J. WALTERS.

Tootles!

Surprises

In theory surprises are good things or they can be - you know, the special outing your best friend or husband springs on you, the bunch of flowers for no reason. The chocolate…oh, yeah! That’s my kind of surprise.

I’ve been thinking about surprises as I work through edits for my latest work in progress. I put my poor characters through the wringer with one bad surprise after the other, starting off when my hero’s brother frames him for murder. Surprises of this nature keep the reader turning the pages. They want to know if the characters are finally going to win over all this adversity. And, of course, there’s the odd good thing happening so both characters and readers are given a little respite.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of surprises. I’m a planner. Part of the enjoyment for me when I do something is the planning, the savoring and looking forward to the coming event. My husband knows this so any surprises he springs on me are usually small ones: a special bottle of wine, some fresh fruit or chocolate. Things he knows I love.

How are you with surprises? Do you like them? Dislike them? Have you had a wonderful surprise lately that you’d like to share?

Sunday Chillin’

Hi all,

I’m up to absolutely nothing and it feels wonderful! My daughter sent me a fun game - now, I’m not into video games, so for me to say a game is fun, it’s got to really be, well, FUN *tj chuckling for her unusual loss of words*

I’m sure most of you are getting ready for RT. Me? I’ll be at home, but I’ll make it next year for sure.

If you’re not going to the convention, come hang out at the Samhain Home Alone Party. We’ll be at the Samhain Cafe Yahoo Group on Wednesday, April 25th, all day.

HomeAlone Banner

Also, our good friend N.J. Walters is hosting the 3rd Annual Ellora’s Cave Home Alone Party the very next day at the EC Readers Group. So double your chances to get in on some pretty cool prizes.

What’s everyone doing on their Sunday…besides playing the game on the other end of THIS LINK ?

Saturday!

The countdown to RT has really begun and this weekend is all about the setting everything up so it runs smoothly next week while I’m gone.

I can also happily announce that Fire and Rain, the book that follows after Ascension (releasing in June), has been contracted and will be releasing from EC by year’s end. This one is also paranormal romantic suspsense and is Laurent and Rain’s story. I’ll put up a page for it at my website but most likely not until after I return from Houston.

Speaking of websites - I’ve put up excerpts for Ascension and Making Chase up at my website so g’wan and take a look if you’re so inclined!

I’ll be running a contest when I get back from RT so keep an eye out for the details.

So what’s everyone reading this week anyway? What’s happening this weekend in your neck of the world?

Don’t That Beat All? Woohoo!

Well, after all the wondering about my mom’s wedding I decided to go. She’s 74 and this is probably the last time she’ll have a big ceremony. She’s been married once in her life (hell, I can’t even claim that one) and is only single again because her husband passed away years ago.

And now, she’s found the man of her dreams…and they aren’t getting married now!

Right as I was buying my plane tickets, I received a phone call. All is well but something ‘came up’ that caused them to postpone the ceremony. So, I don’t have to worry about any tense situations in regard to meeting my husband’s girlfriend at mom’s wedding after all. Wahooo!

Now understand, it’s not that I’m happy she’s not getting married this weekend, but I do appreciate the Universe looking out for me. And since she’s not upset about having to postpone, I’m not upset either.

I kept telling myself, this is going to work out for the best. I’m not going to worry. Think positive.

They’re still going on their honeymoon and she’s keeping all the new dresses she just bought! So don’t’ be surprised to find a bunch of pictures of a little white haired lady on this blog in the near future!

******************************
And now on to less serious, but no less necessary, things. A fabulous author friend, Carolan Ivey, has a post up on her blog at “RT Convention Veterans” that is downright hilarious. Be warned: Make sure you’re not drinking anything while you read it. I just couldn’t stop laughing. And lord knows we ALL need laughter. It’s like medicine - a good laugh can cure anything. So here’s my present to you for the day!

Titilating Tuesday Again?

Wow, time flies, eh? It’s Titilating Tuesday and I’ve got some excerpts of Sword and Crown up at my messageboard should anyone like to take a sneaky peek. It comes out a week from tomorrow! It’s been finished for some time now so I’m excited to look at it again and get to know my characters anew.

Speaking of Sword and Crown - I got my author copies yesterday so I’m going to have a contest to celebrate. If you’d like to win an early copy of S&C - respond to this entry by 5 pm pacific/8 eastern today April 17 and I’ll choose a winner. Easy as that.

RT madness continues around here. I leave a week from today, whee! I haven’t had much chance to read, I’ve written a lot, packed a lot and made a lot of lists though. Between all the stuff I’m bringing and all the stuff Megan is bringing I’m not sure if there’ll be room for us to sleep in the hotel room, LOL!! The big decision hasn’t been made yet though - what book to bring on the plane to read. I wish Charlaine Harris’ new Sookie was going to release this month instead of next, sigh. What’s good? I’ve read a lot of great stuff lately - give me some ideas please. Anyone read La Linda’s new Nocturne yet? I have Gennita Low’s Virtually His on pre-order but it looks like it might be shipping already - that would rock! I’ve been waiting to read this one for some time now. I also have Issy’s Infatuation on my hard drive so I may just read that!

Okay, I’m off to make some lists and deal with my kitchen, sigh. Have a great day!
