I visit the Antarctic conservation blog on a regular basis. Their most recent post is about the quarterly polar dip the residents take. They have a video clip as well as photos of them preparing the ice hole. They had an unexpected visitor pop out of their swimming hole and have a photo of said visitor. I don’t know about you but I felt cold just looking at the photos. I guess I’m just not the polar swim type!
And in other news I was sad to see that the Taj Mahal is starting to turn yellow due to pollution. I’ve visited the Taj Mahal, and it’s such a beautiful place and full of atmosphere. Magical. I have a photo on my website of the “monument to love” during its “white” days. The photo was taken not long after sunrise and I remember it was freezing cold.
I’m giving away a download of one of my Ellora’s Cave Quickies. (I have four different ones for the winner to choose from). All you need to do to enter the draw is comment on this post or any other post written here before 3 June. If you visit and comment every day you’ll have a better chance of winning ;)
Comment starters:
Have you ever done a polar bear swim? Would you if you had the opportunity?
What monument would you leave to commerate your love for a special person in your life?
What are you doing for the holiday weekend?
As far as a monument, when my Mom passed away 8 yrs. ago, I purchased an engraved stepping stone and it is at the cottage where she loved to spend her summers.

Hi Shelley, I having a big cook-out at the grandparents house!!Lots of good food and of course some yummy dessert!!LOL!!
by Stephanie May 25th, 2007 at 3:03 pmI don’t think I would ever do a polar swim, I enjoy heat too much (that is why I live in FL) I do not do cold.
by Kris May 25th, 2007 at 3:59 pmThis weekend I am headed to my parents to celebrate my dad’s 50th B-Day. Then the next day I am double dating with my sis and going to see Pirates 3.
polar swim, yes, why not as long as the medics are waiting, i’m game! i’m just waiting for my boyfriend to come home (which is tom) from the other side of the island then we’d go shopping and watch Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
by Rachelle May 26th, 2007 at 9:40 amCan’t swim plus I don’t like the cold so no way would I do a polar bear swim, lol.
by Lisa W May 26th, 2007 at 9:45 amNo holiday weekend where I am but doing the usual housework.
by Deborah May 26th, 2007 at 9:47 amHave a great holiday! Nothing specail going on for me.
by Shuck Ying May 26th, 2007 at 9:48 amCan’t swim very well and I hate cold water so I would never do a polar bear swim. More of a hot tub lady actually. I have a bad back and soaking in one always makes me feel better and it is so relaxing.
by Cherie J May 26th, 2007 at 10:10 am*brrrrr* No polar swim for me. LOL
It must have been cool to actually visit the Taj Mahal.
I went to Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End yesterday. Wonderful movie! Hubby and I are going out tonight. Other than that, no plans for this weekend.
by NJ Walters May 26th, 2007 at 12:54 pmGirl, if the swimming doesn’t include scuba tanks and bathwater warm water, then probably not! :D

by TJ May 26th, 2007 at 1:18 pmI’m with most of you. Polar swims - not such a great idea. Next weekend I’m heading south for the weekend to Mt Maunganui. They have hot seawater pools. Now that sounds much better!
by Shelley Munro May 26th, 2007 at 3:32 pmThink I will pass on the polar swim. Much prefer an ice cold spring fed creek that I can see to the bottom. In the middle of summer.
by Tehya May 26th, 2007 at 9:28 pmI hate the cold , so no.
I have no special person.
I’m watching tv for the weekend.
by Tamara May 27th, 2007 at 4:18 pmNo polar bear swim for me, no way!
I read that about the Taj Mahal–such a shame. It is so beautiful. I think they said they were going to cover it in mud to clean it, right? Bet that would be a sight.
We didn’t do anything special this weekend, just did a lot of yard work.
by Cynthya May 29th, 2007 at 12:31 amAs much as I like to swim, a polar bear swim is not for me.

by Patricia A. Hoffmeister May 29th, 2007 at 8:25 amPolar swim?? No way! I am like my cats…the older I get the warmer I like to be!!

by Kim May 29th, 2007 at 11:27 amPollution is having bad results on everything. The Taj Mahal is not the only thing being affected, we, as human beings are finding out the effects from pollution and don’t seem to care. Environmental Protection Agency is not doing their job.
by Margaret May 29th, 2007 at 3:26 pmPollution is having bad results on everything. The Taj Mahal is not the only thing being affected, we, as human beings are getting affected from pollution and don’t seem to care.
by Margaret May 29th, 2007 at 3:28 pmLooks like it’s pretty unaminous with regards to the polar swim.
Kim - the engraved stepping stone is a wonderful way to remember your Mom. Lots of people have benches in the Botanic Gardens near me with an engraved plaque to remember loved ones.
by Shelley Munro May 29th, 2007 at 7:46 pmNo way would I ever jump into that icy water. I would have to sit in the sauna for a week just to get my teeth to stop chattering. LOL They are definitely braver than I am.
by Glenna Day May 29th, 2007 at 9:34 pmI would love to be able to see the Taj Mahal. It’s a shame though that it’s turning yellow because of pollution. I hope they can figure out a way to keep it white.
Having a pool in the back yard and a broken heater surely qualifies as a polar bear swim! I’ve been in once this year and I’ll just say that it’s refreshingly brisk. One of my friends kids dove in on Saturday with the air temp being in the mid 80’s and came up gasping with the pool water being only 65.
by Norma Jean May 30th, 2007 at 6:29 pmNo swimming for me. Never really learned how to swim. Helped move my dughter and family to their new home ove the weekend.
by RubyD May 31st, 2007 at 2:15 pmNow trying to recuperate……lol
Brr! I used to live in Maine, where the water’s too cold for swimming in August! My son used to go in till he was blue, though.
And what a gorgeous picture! It must have been wonderful to see the Taj in person!

by Sierra Dafoe May 31st, 2007 at 9:14 pmAnyone for a Cold Swim? We traveled over a couple hundred miles in Illinois to our daughter’s home. Their new home has an above ground pool. My husband and I are here to help open the pool as we had an above ground pool when our children were small. I have always been the first one to get into the pool for cleaning and believe me, it is like Artic Water. Dreading the first move in and come out with chattering teeth and feels like Artic Wind hitting me. Oh my, think how it feels in the middle of July where the temperature is in the 90’s and 100’s. Pain first and then total relaxation.
by Margaret June 1st, 2007 at 5:40 pmI turn blue when in cold water, so no I wouldn’t go to a polar bear swim.
