Dessert #2

Hi guys,

I”m a little late posting this, so I apologize for that. EGYPTIAN VOYAGE hit the cyber-shelves yesterday and I’m still stoked. Woohoo!

On a different note, I got on this dessert kick last time with the big chocolate turd (see post entitled, “Dessert - A New Perspective?” to see what I mean), and thought I’d post another to see if this one does any better. Whatcha think?

What: Brownie Extraordinaire with Saint Louis
Where: Tropicana Casino and Resort; Atlantic City, New Jersey
Price: $1,000

The priciest selection off the restaurant’s three-part Crystal Menu (each of which begins with an amuse sucrée, followed by the featured dessert and ending with petit fours), the Brownie Extraordinaire comes with a Saint Louis crystal atomizer, a $750 keepsake filled with a shot of rare 1996 Quinta do Noval Nacional port wine to be sprayed into the mouth between each bite of hazelnut-coated brownie.”

Compliments of Forbes Magazine.

Inorganic Rubbish

Our local council is very good with recycling efforts. We have rubbish collection once a week along with a paper collection and a can/bottle one. Once a year we have an inorganic rubbish collection where we can put out all the big stuff: old, tires, TV’s, mattresses, broken bicycles, toys, chairs. Just about anything you can think of, apart from toxic stuff. That has a different collection point.

Each year this collection is a source of amusement. We get a notice in the mail telling us to put out our junk for collection on such and such a day. This year it was the 26th. No one listens. As soon as the notice appears in mailboxes, the rubbish starts appearing on the curbside until the neighborhood starts to look a bit tatty and scruffy. Then all the fun starts. We have droves and droves of people in vans, trucks, cars trolling the streets for items of interest - things other people have thrown away that they think they can sell or use.

This year we put out one tire, an old fishing line and the iron supports of an old swing. Only the tire remains.

Yesterday I had to go and pick up my husband and our neighbor after golf. Traffic was heavy. In fact it was like rush hour traffic on a Sunday afternoon! Riding my bicycle around our normally quiet streets has become a dangerous affair with drivers scanning piles of rubbish rather than looking for innocent cyclists.

I think it’s great that people can use the stuff they pick up - recycling at its best - and it’s a good conversation gambit with neighbors. “What have you got left in your pile?” But, oh, boy! I’ll be so glad when the rubbish is gone and traffic levels are back to normal. It will be great to ride my bike in safety again…

Does anyone else have rubbish collections like this? What things would you like to collect? (one of the neighbors saw a broken terracotta pot that we all agreed would make a great garden feature. When she went back it had already gone. Someone else had obviously had the same idea.)

Dessert - A new perspective?

When I saw this article on Forbes.com, my first thought was, “What the hell’s the point? It doesn’t even look good.” Don’t get me wrong, I like yummy desserts as much as the next person (had a caramel apple bread pudding that was to die for not to long ago) but if I’m going to have to sell a kidney to afford it, the thing should at least look palatable. What do you think?

“6. What: The Madeleine TruffleTruffle
Where: Knipschildt Chocolatier; Norwalk, Conn.
Price: $250 per truffle, or $6,000 per pound

Classic ganache—comprised of 70 percent Valrhona chocolate mixed with fresh cream and infused for 24 hours with vanilla pods and pure truffle oil—is shaped around a Perigord truffle, then dipped in Valrhona and rolled in cocoa powder. “The ganache must be whipped repeatedly to make it as soft and silky as possible, then it must be chilled so it’s easier to work with,” said a company spokesperson. The product of a long and painstaking process, these truffles are not available over the counter, but made to order and presented in a silver box with a personal note from chocolate maker Fritz Knipschildt.”

I don’t know…I think that instead of spending $250 for something ugly, I’d be better off making dessert a new pair of shoes instead!

Paranormal Creatures

You’ve probably already guessed that all of us at The Dynamic Trio love the paranormal genre. Between us we’ve written vampires, werewolves, feline shifters along with fae, witches and the odd ghost. Give me something paranormal and I’ll read it.

There are loads of vampire books around. Ditto werewolf and feline shifters. Apart from these creatures what else do you like to read or what other creatures would you like to see more of from authors?

Personally, I’d love to see a few more ghost stories and I’m quite fond of genies or djinn. I’ve read a couple of Egyptian themed myths and wouldn’t mind a few of those. And maybe some stories using Chinese or Japanese myths.

What would you like to see more of?

There’s a rogue on the loose, and the Vampire Council of Ethics has just the man for the job. Alaan Serati, along with his team of elite fighters, is a Seeker for the V.C.O.E. The lethal vampire law enforcement assassin is also the most eligible bachelor of Clan Serati. His job: Take out the rogue vampire who killed his mate years ago. But working with a fellow Seeker quickly becomes a pain in his backside. How is he supposed to accomplish the mission if he can’t keep his mind or his hands off of his fellow officer?

For more years than she wants to remember, Tameth Serati-Cole has worked almost every day, side by side, with the gruff and gorgeous Alaan. It’s been hell considering the special bond between them, something rarely developed between mates. But Alaan doesn’t really want her. He’s still pining away for the woman taken from him years ago. So when he declares his need to bond with her, this lady Seeker ain’t biting…even if she’s wanted to since the day they met.

A Taste of Kiwi

I thought I’d give you a taste of the New Zealand entertainment industry today. Black Sheep is a horror/black comedy. Weta Productions did the special effects in the movie (the same company that did Lord of the Rings). I haven’t seen it yet, but it’s out on DVD here in NZ in a few days and I can’t wait. I’ve seen the previews and it looks great - if you like your horror with a touch of tongue in cheek comedy. It’s filmed in the Wairarapa district and the director/writer is Jonathan King. One of the male actors, Tammy Davis is also in my favorite weekly drama show, Outrageous Fortune.

Tagline: Get ready for the Violence of the Lambs!

Black Sheep

Outrageous Fortune is my weekly must view program. It’s set in West Auckland and is about a family who used to live a life of crime but are trying to clean up. It’s in series three at the moment and has been so popular I believe they’re filming another season. The series has sold overseas, and in England, they’re making their own version. Outrageous Fortune is full of NZ humor and great Kiwi music. It’s also full of swearing and there’s a little bit of nudity. Yep, it’s definitely not PC. Below is the trailer for season three.

And finally, over at my blog I have a question about vampires. If you have time please come on over and give me an answer to my vampire question.

New Website!

Frauke of Croco Designs just did a redesign of my website and it’s FABULOUS! I just finished looking over it and it’s just gorgeous! This is pretty pitiful but I’m so busy mooning over my new site (www.tjmichaels.com) I forgot to prepare something to post today.

So, I’ll give you a heads up on a couple of things instead. First, there are a couple of blogs where I hang out. If you haven’t visited the Ladies of the Club blog, go take a gander. Check out this list of authors that contribute (including me, of course):
* Ann Bruce
* Carolan Ivey
* Denise Agnew
* Desiree Holt
* J.C. Wilder
* Janet Miller
* Jennifer Dunne
* JL Wilson
* Judith Rochelle
* Judy Mays
* Karen McCullough
* Katherine Kingston
* Lauren Dane
* Mardi Ballou
* Marilyn Lee
* Mechele Armstrong
* Melissa Lopez
* NJ Walters
* Samantha Winston
* Tina Gerow

Also, there’s a new author newsletter coming from Samhain Publishing called the Samhellion. It’ll be chock full of articles (and not just about writing, which tends to get boring after awhile) and fun stuff, plus provide an avenue to get to know your favorite authors better.

And last, but not least, there’s the Divas of the Dark. I just love the tagline - Midnight just got a whole lot darker. Shiver! In addition to myself, the contributors are bestselling authors:
* Yolanda Stefsos
* Tawny Taylor
* Sable Grey
* Emma Petersen
* Cathy Clamp
* C.T. Adams

A Day at Conference

The Romance Writers of New Zealand annual conference started today, and I’ve spent the day at workshops with Jennie Crusie, Anne Stuart, and agent, Kristin Nelson. It’s been a fantastic day, and I’ve arrived home with my head stuffed full of information. The food was delicious, the company great (I sat next to Nalini Singh and pumped her a little about her upcoming books. Unfortunately, I didn’t get her to spill any secrets but her new series sounds wonderful) and also caught up with lots of other members I haven’t seen for a while. There was lots of book talk and the onsite bookshop did a brisk trade!

I’m not attending the full conference since my budget had to give somewhere and the lure of sand, sun and Hawaii beckoned rather loudly, but I have the weekend to put the things I’ve learned into practice.

Jenny Crusie suggests a writer let loose on their first draft and write what they want. If that includes thirty pages on china painting then so be it. It’s during the edits when a writer does all the work and prunes away all the dead wood. Prologues, epilogues and flashbacks are all the kiss of death. Don’t do them. Anne Stuart says under some circumstances they’re okay, but Jenny was busy doing throat-cutting motions in the background.

I’m off to have dinner and relax with a glass of wine now. I think all Fridays should be like this!

Question: If you could have a group of writers to spend the day with, who would you choose?
