I wanted the heroine to be someone I could identify with, the hero had to be macho without being over the top. Now I'm trying to write ... it's still all about the characters for me. I don't know if it's that I'm reading with more depth now, but I've found a few authors who I used to read just sort of 'going through the motions' and it's back to tab a/slot b type writing with no emotion in them. I really love that emotion - whether it's vanilla romance or erotica. You've got to feel that connection to the characters. Before I seriously started writing, it was all about the characters for me.
